Rotten Johnny

The Nolatone Rotten Johnny  delivers amazing tonal flexability, touch sensitivity and player inspiration in a 28lb package that won't break the bank.

Both Johnny's (Rotten and Wicked) feature a dual gain control design which allows fine tuning of the gain staging in the preamp. The benefit is an amazing array of tones that can be achieved by varying the level of drive applied at different points in the preamp. You will discover tones you never thought possible allowing everything from sparkly clean with no breakup to full bore overdrive, and every possible point in between. This level of control allows you to dial up just about any tone you can hear in your head.

Combine this with the "No Load" tone controls which minimize signal loss and maximize phase coherency providing transparent tone shaping without coloring the signal and imparting a charactaristic "sound" that can't be dialed out. These controls include:

Bottom (bass) Control

6 position clicker that sets the bass rolloff without loading the signal.

Mid Control

The mid control is completely stand alone and not part of a typical "tone stack", which tends to also limit their functionality. This mid control, when dialed down, allows the bottom and top to seem extended and really transforms the sound into something much more "American".

Top Control

The top control is a Vox style cut control wired backwards so when you turn it down, it gets less bright, controlling the treble without loading the signal. This approach to tone shaping delivers harmonically rich and complex tones, while at the same time offering much better flexibility for dialing up different tones. One fan of the Rotten Johnny once said "It's like a modeling amp, except none of the tones suck!".

The Liverpool Package

The Rotten Johnny is also available with EL84 ourput tubes. The standard EL84 configuration employs a modified power supply, configured similar to our Chimey Limey which is our stellar tribute to the early British amps known for the chime and bloom. This configuration maximizes those same attributes in the Rotten Johnny. While it won't displace the gorgeous sounding Chimey Limey, when paired with the early compressing WGS Green Beret (or even better, upgrade to a 15 watt Alnico Black in Blue) it delivers a very satisfying experience that is decidedly in that same camp.

The Rotten Johnny was awarded with the Premier Guitar Magazine Premier Gear and top 12 Gear picks in 2011. Since then the amp has had tweaks to enhance the clean headroom and refine the tone even further. All glorious things Premier Guitar wrote about the Rotten Johnny still apply but now there is even more clean range to work with. It still crunches with primal bliss when the gain controls are opened up, but many asked for better clean headroom, and we like to please our customers here at Nolatone. Its high spirited brother, Wicked Johnny, brings on extra grind and takes the overdrive to a level Rotten Johnny never mustered at his meanest. So between the two Johnny brothers, we've got most any low poer amp need you migth have covered.
